Big news:
Akiva The Believer has just received smicha (ordination) from Reb Zalman (Rav Meshulam Zalman Chiya Hacohen Schacter-Shalomi)*.
This is a first. The first time in the history of the Jewish people that a drummer has received this designation. The actual title is "Commander of the Drum." Additionally he is "to conduct the other drummers with the care, respect and overflowing love of the Most High."
Reb Zalman wishes the Holy Temple to be rebuilt swiftly in our time. When it does, he designates Akiva to be the Rosh, the Head of the Drummers Section of the Orchestra of the Levites."
*Reb Zalman is the Spiritual Father and Leader of the Renewal Movement of Judaism. He is responsible for many of the innovations and renewed traditions which are finding their way into all corners of the Jewish and non-Jewish world.
